After what seems to have been a suicide on campus on Monday, classes at Cornell Elementary School in the Okemos School District were cancelled on Tuesday.
According to a letter sent to parents Monday night, the students were released early Monday afternoon after an “unresponsive individual” was discovered in the area. They claimed that schools had been closed.
“Students will remain safely in classrooms for the remainder of the school day,” according to the letter. “More steps have been taken to make sure that students are always safe and being watched.”
The students were led into the hallway by adults, and according to the report, “classroom shutters were closed and hallway windows were covered to protect students from the conditions.”
Tuesday, all Cornell events were cancelled, including those before and after childcare. Counselors will be on hand to assist students who require emotional support when classes resume on Wednesday, according to officials.
“Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it occurs close to us,” the letter says. “Many of us will experience a range of emotions, including shock, sadness, and even some perplexity. “The important thing is that we look out for and support one another.”
In the letter, school officials said that police had said there was no active threat to the public and that the death was being looked into as a suicide.
